The Experiences of Haitian Students in Ivy League UniversitiesThe study aims to fill an important gap in higher education literature by giving voice to a population that is underexplored in higher education research
Haitian students are among the best and brightest in Ivy League institutions; however, the lack of empirical research focused on Haitian students in elite academic environments overlooks characteristics that shape their unique experiences. By focusing on Haitian students in Ivy League contexts, the study illuminates the complexity and understanding of the process of cultural assimilation, challenges homogenizing narratives about Black student experiences, and informs institutional practices that are more culturally responsive and inclusive. Examining Haitian students’ experiences becomes even more compelling when contextualized within the broader literature on the experiences of Black students in U.S. higher education.
The study is grounded in both personal insight and academic urgency. Firstly, it sharpens its focus on distinguishing more clearly between the general category of Black students and the specific cultural and linguistic identity of Haitian students, which reinforces the uniqueness and necessity of this study. Second, it emphasizes the researcher's personal connection to the topic, his professional background, and his clear commitment to elevating Haitian narratives are evident throughout the study and provide a strong foundation for this scholarly endeavor.
Review of the literature is reflective of key areas relevant to the topic, including cultural identity, assimilation, racialization, and the role of language. The incorporation of major theoretical constructs such as Du Bois’s double consciousness and Fanon’s colonial identity struggle corroborates the validity of research. These theoretical frameworks and perspectives are not only appropriate but deeply resonant with the lived experiences of many Haitian students navigating the culture of elite institutions. A clear explanation of how these theories will guide interview protocols, data analysis, or interpretation of student narratives will significantly strengthen the theoretical grounding of the research.
Methodologically, the study uses a phenomenological approach, which is well-suited to the study’s goals. Understanding how students make meaning of their lived experiences fits squarely within the phenomenological tradition. The plan to use in-depth interviews as the primary data collection method will provide greater clarity in the recruitment strategy—particularly in the identification of participants, and ensuring a diverse range of perspectives within the sample. Consideration of potential gatekeepers, social networks, or student organizations that might support the recruitment efforts will be implemented to maintain ethical rigor and confidentiality.
Research questions are formulated and appropriately exploratory for a qualitative educational research study. The emphasis on identity negotiation, belonging, and cultural navigation in elite academic spaces reflects both personal depth and scholarly ambition. Moreover, the questions are phrased to make the study more analytically focused. The study will not only examine suggestions Haitian students have for improving their experiences but also take into account what insights they can offer institutions and researchers to better support culturally specific needs. Their answers will emphasize the agency and expertise of the participants while also pointing to the practical implications of the study–END.
